Box Size

After holding a Carcassonne-size box, I realized it was too big for Lanterns. So I made a trip to Madness Games and Comics to study box sizes.

Countdown: 65 days. I did some preliminary research on box sizes, and I had decided to use a box the size of Compounded (8.75″ x 8.75″) or Carcassonne base game (10.75″ x 7.5″). I already owned Compounded, and (as I mentioned in the post on US shipping) I recently ordered a copy of Carcassonne to get an idea of shipping weight. I’m not particularly fond of a square box for Lanterns, but it was clear after holding Carcassonne in my hand that it was just too massive for Lanterns.

It’s important for the size and weight of the box, the depth and complexity of the game, and the retail price to all feel like a good match. So I took a trip to my friendly local game store (Madness Games and Comics; I just moved to the area so I hadn’t been in there yet) yesterday to look at boxes. I found a few that made good sense:

  • Adventure Maximus (9.5″ x 6″ x 2″): This was a little heavier than Lanterns will be, but the dimensions felt good.
  • Roll Through The Ages (8.5″ x 6.25″ x 2″): This was also heavier than Lanterns, but these dimensions also felt really good.
  • Baba Yaga (8.25″ x 6.5″ x 2.25″): This box looked liked a storybook, which was awesome in its own right but not appropriate for Lanterns. It was a little too thick. The front cover might have been a little too short and a little too wide: I think a little taller and leaner would feel closer to the elegance of Lanterns.
  • Fleet Arctic Bounty (8.25″ x 5″ x 1.75″): I believe this fits in a USPS Priority Small box; that could be nice for international shipping, but it really is too small for Lanterns.

I think something close to one of those first two sizes will be great. The next step to figuring out what box to use is to figure out how to lay out all the tiles on the punchboards. The main lake tiles are fairly large (2.33″ x 2.33″), which will give me less flexibility for arranging tiles on punchboards: I may have to go with a wider box than I would otherwise like. We’ll see.
